The critically acclaimed play, “Le Roi des Pâquerettes”, tells the unbelievable story of Louis Blériot, one of the most renowned pioneers of aviation.

Calais, July 25, 1909. England is no longer part of an island! The reason? The flight attempted and succeeded by the young aviation-obsessed French engineer known as Louis Blériot, after whom many aircraft were subsequently named.

But things did not initially bode well for him. Firstly, an uncertain, even downright temperamental weather forecast, and then there was Blériot’s intrepid young rival, Hubert Latham. Latham had attempted the crossing a few days earlier, only to ditch in the water. He tried again on July 27 of the same year and failed once more, this time just a short stretch off the British coastline.

The play not only focuses on these numerous moments in History (with a capital “H”) and on the customs of the time, but also examines the human and interpersonal angles that frame this 37-minute epic set over the Channel (at the controls of the Blériot XI). A flight time of little more than half an hour (but so many adventures before even taking off!) and the rest is history…
