In the 1930s, a young girl’s dream of becoming a pilot is thwarted by her family’s reluctance to let her take to the skies. But every family has its exceptions!

In the 1930s: Natalia, a young teenager, dreams of becoming a pilot—despite her father’s objections—and of following in the footsteps of Robert, a “flying ace” who has gone missing. When her father outright refuses, she decides to pay a visit to her uncle Alfred, who was once close to Robert and who now lives on the fringes of society, selling spare airplane parts among other things. Eager to learn more about this uncle whom she barely knows, she attempts to find out a little more, especially about his real ties with Robert. A ski-flying competition will soon complicate matters, since Natalia wants to take part…

The first book in a 4-part series, “Oncle Mécano” portrays an era when the dream of becoming a pilot was no sure thing, despite the achievements of the first pioneering women in aviation in the Western world. This first volume also sets the scene for the interwar period and introduces the characters that readers will come to know over the course of the four albums in the series, with a style reminiscent of manga.
