Here’s the extraordinary story of Eugene Bullard, an African American who defied the odds to become a true hero in the service of France, told in a comic book.
It’s a destiny the likes of which are rarely, if ever, seen! This is the destiny of Eugene Bullard, a name that few people know… And yet, the story of this African American, who enlisted in the French Army during the First World War, is enough to make your head spin! Born into poverty in the United States, he set sail for Europe when he was just 17, arriving in France in 1913 to take part in a boxing match at the Élysée Montmartre in Paris, where he decided to settle.
When the First World War broke out a few months later, he enlisted on France’s side, first in a marching regiment, then, due to battle wounds, in the air force – after training on Caudron aircraft. He was one of the very first African Americans to become a fighter pilot.
With the motto “All Blood Runs Red” emblazoned on the fuselage of his aircraft, he took part in over twenty missions in all. Here’s his story told in a critically acclaimed comic book!
