To mark the 80th anniversary of the disappearance of the author of “The Little Prince”, here’s a book that investigates Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s last moments…
It’s a mystery that will have tormented more than one aviation fan: the disappearance of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, 80 years ago this year, 2024, at the controls of his P-38 Lightning.
What exactly happened after he left Bastia-Borgo airfield on the morning of July 31, 1944, on a simple reconnaissance mission? No one knows for sure, even eight decades after the aviator became a legend – he had already written himself into history.
Since then, a wide variety of theories have been put forward, including that he ran out of fuel, became unwell or even committed suicide. And while the most plausible explanation seems to be an attack by a Luftwaffe aircraft, it doesn’t tell us exactly what the circumstances of the crash were. The result of a collaboration between renowned journalist Jacques Pradel and Luc Vanrell, the diver and archaeologist who identified the wreckage, this book is a thorough investigation into Saint-Exupéry’s disappearance.
