Outstanding pilots, explorers and even resistance fighters… Here’s a book that pays tribute to the women who have contributed to the epic story of aviation, from its beginnings to the present day.

Adrienne Bolland, Elisabeth Tible, Sophie Blanchard, Thérèse Peltier, Marie Marvingt, Raymonde de Laroche, Maryse Bastié, Hélène Boucher, Jacqueline Auriol, and many more! Each and every one of them is part of the sometimes-forgotten history of aviation, having been pioneers in French and, by extension, global aviation. Women who are often left out of books and other retrospectives recounting the legend of the discipline, but who nonetheless made a significant contribution to the vast edifice of air navigation.

And yet, in their day, they faced the same technical and meteorological uncertainties as men, overcame the same doubts and defied far more conventions given their circumstances and the mores of the time – some of them living in the 1910-1920s.

Pilots, acrobats (loops and all), daredevil parachutists, sometimes explorers of faraway lands (Adrienne Bolland, among others) … These women were true stars! Cheered on by the crowds, many of them made the front pages of the newspapers of the day, before the memory of their exploits gradually faded from the collective memory. This book is a timely reminder of the vast contribution made by women who were “daring, adventurous and free”.
