This second volume in the series “Les Femmes dans les nuages” looks at women’s contribution to aviation from 1918 to 1945.
Following on from the first book that chronicled women’s contribution to aeronautics from 1784 to 1918, this sequel takes us from the end of the Great War to 1945. Although there were still very few women in the sector up until the end of World War I, their presence and exploits were to increase once peace was restored.
For example, in 1921, the Frenchwoman Adrienne Bolland crossed the Andes by air; in 1930, Maryse Bastié set an endurance record by spending almost 39 hours up in the clouds; in 1932, the American Amelia Earhart made history by becoming the first woman to fly solo cross the Atlantic and in 1934, Hélène Boucher set a landmark record by reaching a speed of 444 km per hour.
All over the world, women were taking to the skies. And taking the same risks as men, very often risking their lives, to drive aviation forward.
When World War II broke out, they were still hard at work. As flight nurses, convoy escorts, parachutists, and fighter pilots, they made a valuable contribution, on all sides involved in the conflict, to the battles and other campaigns in which they took part. This book provides an overview of their contribution to aviation in approximately forty countries!
